Global South meets Nürtingen

The Challenge

How can we inspire behavioral change towards more sustainable practices among youth in the Global North?

The Objective

Educating and inspiring youth to reflect on their contribution in a global world for more sustainability

The Location

Nürtingen, Germany

In this innovative educational program, a young person from the Indian Sundarbans presents her living conditions to students in Germany.

The program extends over three school lessons of 90 minutes each, with three short videos at the heart of each lesson. To accompany the videos, we provide instructions for games, interactions and exercises that students can use to further deepen and reflect on what they have seen. The content focuses on three topics that are relevant to students in the Sundarbans as well as in Germany:

  • the effects of climate change
  • environmental pollution caused by plastic waste and
  • where our food comes from and how it is produced.

The program contributes to the educational perspective “Education for Sustainable Development”, which aims to understand the impact of one’s own actions on global developments. It is aimed at students in grades 5 to 8 and fits in thematically with the geography and religion curriculum (especially grades 7 and 8).

Last school year, the program was already successfully implemented in several schools in Nürtingen. We will be starting a new round in the first half of the 2024/2025 school year.
